New delivery area
We are very proud to announce that ONLYorganic are now delivering all around the Southampton area. If you have friends, colleagues or family living in this part of Hampshire, please let them know about us.
Operating from a depot at Warsash, we intend to add new routes on an ongoing basis. At present deliveries will be on Sundays and Mondays only, early morning and evenings. There is some leeway on times, so, if time is an issue, all that is necessary is a phone call or an email. A 2-hour delivery slot will then be arranged and confirmed.
All of the same products will be available, so if you are recommending us, or sending a gift, you can be confident that all goods will be delivered in tip-top condition.

Latest from Penrhiw farm
Hello

The usual reminder that we will have fresh beef, lamb and mutton this coming weekend.  I have also made some sausages - beef and tomato and lamb and rosemary - these are in the deep freeze as I simply don't have time to make fresh ones ready for the deliveries and markets.  I also have lamb and beef burgers in the deep freeze.   Markets as usual - Usk On Sat, Riverside on Sunday.
Lots seems to have happened this past fortnight - might be something to do with the continuing wonderful weather we have had !   We had a really good sale of our home bred yearling rams in the Nelson sale - one was up with the top priced rams of the sale !  We are catching up on fencing jobs, manure spreading, repairing gaps in the stone walls and sheep sorting.   The thinner ewes have been put onto some better grazing to fatten up before they meet up with the rams in a few weeks time.  The old ones have been drafted out of the flock and will become mutton over the next few months.
I have bought and collected a new horse - she is only a baby really and is not ready for riding yet.  She will be quietly broken in over the winter and will hopefully be ready to do some very low key shows and events next year - definitely a project for the future.  She is called "Flo" and is just 3 years old.
Finally, a quick one for the sympathy vote - some will remember me whingeing about my finger back in the spring.  Well to cut a long story short I had an operation on it last Friday. I will recover in time for the weekend - I've been told !
Regards
Celia

Our first Meat Boxes went out last week, and it looks like they are going to be a big hit. We have already received subscription orders for them, but they can always be purchased as single orders, if that is easier.

16th July 2008
Latest from Penrhiw farm
Advance notice - we will not have much best beef roasting joints and steak in 2 weeks time (early August). Only doing fore quarter meat that weekend - plenty of mince and braising.

The weather continues to be the main talking point on the farm - the fields are so wet for the time of year. If it was October we would be considering bringing the cows indoors to prevent poaching the ground. We are getting really impatient to continue with the hay and silage - but, alas, no long spell of good weather on the horizon. One or two days are just not enough. We had a set of twin calves this week - we were expecting them as the scanning lady had spotted them last December. All doing well after spending a few days in the shed out of the rain. Spent some time vaccinating the sheep against Blue tongue - a new disease which is threatening to devastate the livestock sector. This has come from the continent carried and spread by midges. We have to do the cattle as well.

13th July 2008

Our first meat supplies were delivered this week, and interest is good. Welsh Lamb and Beef from a local supplier is packed on the farm and delivered to you in cool-boxes. This time of the year there is fresh meat cut to order twice each month. Frozen meat from the farm's own stores is available most of the time.

Times of Plenty
You may have noticed how much extra is in your Box scheme deliveries lately. While supplies are more plentiful, the prices have been dropping on many items. Because of this, our boxes are fuller, better quality and better value. The 'hugry gap' period is well and truly over. What adifference to only a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't seem long ago that the Boxes were looking noticeably mean and the quality was not great (our apologies, but this happens occasionally). Hooray for the summer months, and lets hope the summer harvest carries on as it's started. The fruit season is starting, and I'm sure we are all looking forward to the first british apples and pears.
At last, we can now offer fresh, organic, new season lamb and beef from South Wales farms. Ther will be more and more local offerings as the season progresses. The Venison season should start in early September.

New for July and ongoing, is our free monthly competition. Have a go and your next delivery could be on us. There is no purchase necessary to take part, so if you haven't tried us yet, now is a great time to do so.

New Season is well under way

The new season is now starting in earnest, and the quality of new potatoes is outstanding. New season carrots, bunched with the leaves still on, helda beans, broad beans and celery are all looking good too. A limited supply of early cauliflower are also available, but these may not be available every day as yet. A steady supply of courgettes, chard and spinach are arriving almost every day, as are spring greens, which are also of fine quality, as you would expect early in the season. Leafy vegetables are very tender at present, so be sure to refrigerate them as soon as possible. English tomatoes, regular and vine, are in plentiful supply and we now have a novel supply of 'plum-vine' tomatoes. British mini-salad leaves have been available for a few weeks now, and we are receiving regular stocks of various lettuces. Almost daily, throughout the year, we have watercress and various types of mushrooms, including the ever popular 'portabella' and stocks of these items look likely to be available for the foreseeable future, as will the chicken's eggs from Monmouth. Rhubarb has been available for a while now and supply is fast coming to a close. The British fruit season is just starting and the first strawberries look very good indeed. There will, of course be lots more british produce available as the weeks go on.

Quote from Children's Britannica, Fourth Edition, Volume 1, page110.

" Chemical fertilizers and weedkillers have also contributed to higher yeilds and taken away the risks which used to threaten success. However, these substances have their disadvantages. It is found that where fertilizer or pesticide is used year after year it loses its effect so more and more has to be used. The result can be damaging to wildlife and can lead to the pollution of drinking water into which the chemicals seep. To prevent the problem some farmers have returned to older organic methods of farming, using only manures and natural methods of controlling pests "

  •  With such an authoritative works containing this information, it's no wonder more and more people are eating organic.
